Three students in the Upper Cape Regional Tech’s Environmental Science and Technology program will discuss their award winning project on use of black soldier fly larvae composting systems to help decrease the amount of food waste from the school’s culinary shop going to landfills by providing faster decomposition, while also yielding protein- and calcium-rich organic feed for fish and chickens, organic worm tea fertilizer, and an organic compost.

Winners of the State and National SkillsUSA Gold Medal in the Community Action Project category, the students will present at the June 5, 2015 First Friday breakfast of the Cape Cod Technology Council.   The breakfast will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Hyannis Golf Club on Route 132, Hyannis. The event is open to the public.

Black Soldier Fly Larvae, small grubs about the size of a raisin, can decompose food waste at very rapid rates. The students’ project utilized a container, sawdust, the larvae, food waste, and water to create necessary humidity for the process. The students — Joseph Fisher, Jack Rogers, and Ann Marie Luppino — will be competing in the Career Pathways Showcase category at the Massachusetts SkillsUSA Championships in May. In this project students are to develop a learning-based project that will benefit their school, local industry, or their community with emphasis on career preparation. This year, students are focusing more on management of the project and aspects that can be involved in mass production of the output.

Jack Rogers of Bourne, is a junior at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School and also is serving an internship with the Barnstable Department of Natural Resources. At Upper Cape Tech Jack has participated in extracurricular activities such as School Committee Student Representative, National Honor Society member, Captain of the Football team, and Varsity Lacrosse. He has also participated in the Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School’s Science Fair where he received a Silver Medal for a Black Soldier Fly Larvae System design. After high school he strives to pursue a career as a game warden.

Ann Marie Luppino of Wareham is a junior and a volunteer at her town’s middle school, educating the youth on the importance of environmental science and renewable energy. Interested in pursuing a career in environmental engineering, she is an active participant in multiple extracurricular activities. As a junior she has been recognized for her efforts with researching and formulating a project on Denitrifying Bacteria and its effect on freshwater, winning first place in the school’s science fair.

Joseph Fisher, also a junior at Upper Cape Tech, is a resident of Wareham and participant in extracurricular activities such as sports, SkillsUSA, and the UCT Science Fair. He plans on entering the civil engineering field after graduating college.

The CCTC event includes networking and a hot breakfast followed by the presentation and questions and answers.
