Job Description
Position: Systems Administrator
The Marine Biological Laboratory invites applications from experienced systems administrators for a full time year round position with the Encyclopedia of Life project (http://www.eol.org).
The successful applicant will be jointly responsible for the support and continued management of the computing environment upon which the informatics infrastructure for the EOL project has been developed, and from which the early versions of the Encyclopedia of Life are being served. The applicant will work with a senior system administrator and in a team environment to provide systems administration and technical support for the EOL project, both the production system and the internal infrastructure. The responsibilities include joint management with existing staff for databases and distributed file systems. In addition, work may include areas such as file synchronization, systems and applications security, hardware maintenance, networking, and data integrity and backup. The position will support the computing needs of other members of the team inclusive of hardware and software selection, installation and configuration. This position may require "on call" time outside of normal work hours, and possible additional duties. The position is available immediately, will be for two years in the first instance, with continuation contingent upon available funds.
Qualifications of the successful candidate:
The successful candidate will have at least 4-5 years experience extensive experience in Systems Administration, preferably with production software deployment groups. Experience with Linux is required, and with other systems (MacOS, Windows) considered a benefit. Experience with data bases and some scripting language required. A background in Web site administration, cluster administration, or database replication considered a plus. The successful applicant will work in a small team and is expected to have good team and communication skills as well as be capable of working independently under broad supervision.
